Skip the Dairy: 10 Types & Brands of Non-Dairy Milk

Types & Brands of Non-Dairy Milk

Milk is great for breakfast, on its’ own or poured over cereal.

It also goes well in recipes and baking whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert. And it’s a nice, quick drink to have on hand when you’re thirsty.

But the milk you drink doesn’t have to be dairy-based.

There are plenty of reasons why more and more people are turning to non-dairy milk.

And companies are listening.

At this point, soy milk is pretty well known. But there are many other types of non-dairy milk that you can now enjoy, whether store bought or homemade.

Non-Dairy Milk

Types of non-dairy milk to check out include:

  • oat
  • hemp
  • almond
  • soy
  • rice
  • hazelnut
  • coconut
  • cashew
  • flax seed
  • grains

A combination of any of these ingredients can also be used to create non-dairy milk blends.

So there’s lots of variety.

Worried about calcium?

Many people depend on milk as a good source of calcium. So, if you cut out dairy where do you get calcium?

In actual fact, calcium is present in many plant-based foods. In particular, almonds and soybeans are good sources of calcium.

Eating a balanced vegan diet with an assortment of colourful plant foods including leafy green vegetables should help ensure you get all the calcium you need.

However, some non-dairy milks are also fortified with calcium in case you’re still concerned about getting enough.

Many non-dairy milk brands are also gluten-free, checking the carton or contacting the company directly is the best way to confirm which ingredients are in their products.

As for sugar, oil, salt, preservatives, or the like, the ingredients vary from one brand to another as well as the different types of non-dairy milks. Always check the carton to be sure as ingredients can change from time to time.
