Small steps: how to stick with a healthy, plant-based lifestyle

Making those first steps towards plant-based eating, or any healthy living goal, are often the most difficult. But staying the course afterwards poses its’ own challenges too.

Thinking about all the changes you’ve made and having to stick with them can feel overwhelming.

And switching to a healthy, plant-based lifestyle is a big change.

But dwelling on the long road before you is what can really make everything seem much more daunting than it needs to be. It’s certainly important to keep looking forward—just not too far.

So, rather than spending your time thinking about all that lies ahead, it’s best to take things one day at a time.

Once you’ve set the path you want to go in (to create a healthier lifestyle), then concentrate on the little things you need to do each day to keep moving in that direction.

Sometimes things may get frustrating. Sometimes things will definitely get frustrating. But that’s change for you. It’s a learning process.

And while planning for tomorrow is great, there may be times when you need to narrow your focus.

When the change feels like it’s too much, just think about today, your next meal, or your afternoon exercise routine. Be present in the moment and make the best choices you can, for today. Don’t bother fretting about tomorrow.

Each healthy choice you make is worth feeling good about.

So reinforce the changes you’re making by mentally praising yourself when you make good decisions. Since, every bit in the right direction counts.

Whether your motivation is weight loss or improving your health in a number of ways, remind yourself of your reasons for wanting to follow a healthy, plant-based lifestyle.

Find things that encourage you to continue making healthy choices and that keep you interested in doing so. Like starting your own vegetable garden or having a good supply of new recipes to try.

Also take the time to reflect on the progress you’ve made and how far you’ve already come.

It may be starting each day with a wholesome bowl of oatmeal, eating more salads, or increasing the intensity of your workouts. But regardless of the specifics, chances are you’ve already made solid steps towards change and have experienced some positive results. Let that renew your motivation to keep going.

And true, lasting change is made through daily practise. So, most of all, focus on the present. On what you can do today.

Each day builds more momentum in the direction you want to go. Even if you haven’t seen the overnight results you had hoped for, be patient. And be consistent.

The more making healthy choices become a habit, the easier they will be to continue and the more comfortable you will become with your new, healthier life. It will become your new “normal”.

As your healthy, plant-based diet and lifestyle begin to take shape, each decision you make and action you take help to pave the way.

So don’t allow yourself to trip up while thinking about the distant future.

Instead, just take it one day, one meal at a time. Because making change stick is all about: small steps.
